TPU Lecturers To Teach At Chinese University

In the fall semester of 2015 four teachers of Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) will go to China to conduct classes for students of Shenyang Polytechnic University (SPU). The polytechnics will teach Chinese students higher mathematics, the theory of mechanics and the Russian language. This agreement was reached by representatives of the universities during the visit of the Shenyang delegation to TPU last week.

“We have signed an additional agreement on several items. In particular, we discussed opportunities of teachers' exchange,” - Said Rector of Shenyang Polytechnic University, Ms. Liu Jun, adding that the universities have been collaborating since 2009, and expanding all the time the boundaries of interaction.

Tomsk and Shenyang Polytechnic Universities have taught students on the joint program “2 + 2” for several years. Chinese students study two years at SPU, and the remaining two - at Tomsk Polytechnic University. After completing the programme, they receive a diploma of two universities. Last year, 23 graduates received the Sino-Russian diplomas.

“Today, 34 students trained on the programme in three directions. We have ambitious goals for increasing the number of enrolled students in our program “2 + 2” - up to 120 people a year. And the number of mentioned areas of cooperation is not a dogma, there may be more,” - said Vice-rector for academic affairs of TPU Yuri Borovikov at the meeting.

He noted that on one of the recent meetings the leaders of Russia and China have set a task before universities - in 2020 to increase the mutual exchange of students from the two countries up to 100 thousand people a year. “We would like to make a tangible contribution to the achievement of the goal set by the leaders,” - said Borovikov.

Currently student exchanges between the two countries involve 42,000 people. Of these, only 17,000 are the Russian students who go to China for education.

After signing the agreement the representatives of the Shenyang delegation met with Chinese students who studied on the joint programme at Tomsk Polytechnic University.

Student Cui Jiang, for example, studies the second year at TPU. Prior to that, he studied two years in his homeland. Already there students intensively learn Russian, to study in groups with Russian students without special training.

“I decided to go to the graduate school at TPU, and then I want to work on my specialty in Russia, - says Cui Jiang. - My specialty - mechanical engineering and this industry is very well developed - it takes almost the first place in the world. Tomsk Polytechnic University will give me a strong education. So I think that my choice is correct.”

Yan Jun is already a master's student of TPU, on the contrary, he intends to return to work in China. “We all know that Russia has a good quality of education and TPU is a good university, where we can get a quality education,” - he justified his choice of alma mater.

It should be noted that an integral part of the “2 + 2” is a summer language school in Tomsk. Each year Chinese students come to Tomsk Polytechnic University, to practice the language and adapt to life in the city.
