09 May 2014 International Students of TPU Made Short Films to Tell About Their Life in SiberiaA dozen videos about living and studying at Tomsk Polytechnic University were directed by Russian and international students of the university for the competition of short films in the second language. Students from Vietnam told about difficulties of foreigners studying in Russian universities, our compatriots told about their motives for learning Chinese and a student from Chile showed how he had seen Tomsk. “Every year we organize this contest and consider it very important, especially for foreign students - Irina Gerasimchuk says, the contest organizer, head of the Language Centre of IIE & LC. – To some extent it helps them to make friends with peers, find mates with the same interests, and overcome the language barrier. In such a creative way our international students can tell about themselves, find new companions with similar interests during preparations for the contest.” In the films the foreign students told not only about the successes and experiences of life in Tomsk, but about problems too. For example, this year Vietnamese students submitted a movie called “Is man to man a friend?” which deals with the complexities of adapting to Russian university. They showed how difficult to study well in the second language and how difficult to find friends in another country. A short film about Tomsk - a city of contrasts – a Chilean Jan Mitchell directed, student of the Pre-university department of the Institute of International Education and Language Communication. His film is called “Running. I'm running and I see life”. “I see Tomsk as a city of contrasts - says Jan Mitchell. - On the one hand, landscapes, unusual ancient buildings, people from different continents, on the other - not a very beautiful place. But I love this city, because the main thing in life is love, and Tomsk is a place where there are many young and in love.” Totally 11 short films are presented in four categories: “Studying at TPU is ...”, “Tomsk - a city of contrasts”, “Dormitory of my dream” and “My free time”. All movies filmed in the second language for authors - English, Russian, Chinese and German. Now → on IIE & LC website there is online vote for the best student short film. The final review of movies will be on May 14 at 6 p.m. in the main building of TPU, 310 room. Everyone is welcome!
