Two students of IIE&LC will represent TPU at UN headquarters in New York City

Two students from the Institute of International Education and Language Communication, Tomsk Polytechnic University, Ngo Thi Nyam and Le Thi Kim Ngan have won a student essay contest “Many Languages, One World 2016” held within United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) initiative. At the end of July, the girls will participate in the Global Youth Forum “Transformation of the World: the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, which is to be held in New-York, USA.

The purpose of the essay contest and youth forum is to promote global citizenship and intercultural understanding through multilingualism and continuous studying of six UN official languages: English, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, Russian and French. TPU students wrote their essays in the Russian language which they have already been studying at the University for five years. An essay should contain about 2,000 words and reflect issues of global citizenship, intercultural understanding and the role of language knowledge to stimulate them. The girls wrote how mastery of several languages helps to build global citizenship responsibility and mutual understanding among nations.

Scientific supervisor of the students, associate professor at the Department of Russian as a Foreign Language, Ludmila Vorobyova said: “This event was organised to bring together young scientists from around the world who have global thinking so that they could discuss global issues and initiatives. It should be noted that it’s the second time TPU students have won the contest. Last year, IIE&LC student Dam Thi Ngoc Trin worthily represented TPU in the UN General Assembly Hall”.

When the contest was held for the first time in 2014, 128 participants from different countries presented almost 1,500 essays. This year, 3,500 people from 165 countries took part in the contest. There were students of all levels of education: from first year students to postgraduates.

As a result of a three-stage process ten winners were chosen in each of six official UN languages, all together 60 winners. According to the results, Ngo ThiNyam and Le Thi Kim Ngan were invited to New York to participate in a number of events that are to be held on July 25-31, 2016. These activities will include the Global Youth Forum “Transformation of the World: the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. The forum is to be held in UN headquarters preceded by a preliminary conference sponsored and organized by ELS Educational Services, Inc.
