Pre-university course

International students who would like to obtain their Bachelor's, Master's or Postgraduate Degree in Russia are provided with a one-year course designed to prepare them for direct entry into Tomsk Polytechnic University's wide range of degree studies.

Programs offered include:

  • preparation for undergraduate studies (Bachelor's and Specialist);
  • preparation for postgraduate studies (Master's and Postgraduate course)
  • General Russian.

The main aim of the preparatory course for entry into undergraduate studies is to study General Russian. Other subjects are selected by students themselves and are within the following areas of specialty:

  1. Technical (core units: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering Graphics, Computer Science, Country Studies, Scientific Style; specified electives: Russian for Specific Purposes, Introduction to Geology, Physical Training).
  2. Biomedical (core units: Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Basics of Social Sciences and Humanities, Scientific Style; specified electives: Russian for Specific Purposes, Basics of Anatomy, Physical Training).
  3. Humanitarian (core units: Literature, Country Studies, Geography, Computer Science, Culture Studies, Scientific Style; specified electives: Russian for Specific Purposes, Basics of Natural Sciences, Physical Training).
  4. Economic (core units: Mathematics, Basics of Economics, Computer Science, Geography, Country Studies, Culture Studies, Scientific Style; specified electives: Russian for Specific Purposes, Basics of Natural Sciences, Physical Training).

The preparatory course for entry into postgraduate studies of technical, economic and humanitarian specialties provides intensive training in Academic Russian and the selected majors, and equips students with essential academic skills.

The preparatory course is mainly aimed at Academic Russian skills mastering (55-70% of the study time), other subjects are selected by students themselves.

Upon successful completion of the preparatory course (for undergraduate, postgraduate studies, General Russian) students are awarded a certificate.

Upon successful completion of Test of Russian as a Foreign Language (TORFL-1) students are awarded a First Level Certificate in TORFL, which is required for admission to any university or other institution of higher education in the Russian Federation.

  • October, 1 Ц June 30 (9 months). Assessment Ц Test of Russian as a Foreign Language (TORFL-1), core units.
  • January, 15 Ц August 25 (7 months). Assessment Ц Test of Russian as a Foreign Language (TORFL-1), core units.
  • March, 1 Ц June, 30, next year (14 months).
